Cancer awareness and information

Breast Cancer

Awareness, early detection and timely care can make a difference.

Breast cancer develops when cells in the breast begin to grow abnormally. It can affect women and, less commonly, men. Understanding changes in your breasts and seeking medical advice when something feels unusual are important steps.

Understanding the disease

What is breast cancer?

Breast cancer can begin in different parts of the breast. Some types grow slowly, while others may develop more quickly. Treatment and outlook depend on the type of cancer, its stage and individual health factors.

Important to know

Not every breast lump is cancer. However, a new or persistent change should always be checked by a qualified healthcare professional.

Knowledge and awareness

What you should know

Understanding symptoms, risk factors and available care can help people make informed decisions with their healthcare team.

01

Symptoms & Warning Signs

Changes that may need medical attention. Symptoms can also be caused by conditions other than cancer.

  • A new lump or thickening in the breast or underarm
  • A change in the size, shape or appearance of the breast
  • Changes to the skin of the breast, such as dimpling or redness
  • A change in the nipple, including inversion
  • Unusual nipple discharge, particularly if bloody
  • Persistent pain in the breast or underarm
02

Risk Factors

Factors that may increase the chance of developing this cancer. Having a risk factor does not mean someone will develop cancer.

  • Increasing age
  • A family history of breast or ovarian cancer
  • Certain inherited genetic changes
  • Personal history of breast conditions or breast cancer
  • Some hormonal and reproductive factors
  • Certain lifestyle and environmental factors
03

Prevention & Healthy Living

Practical steps that may help reduce risk and support overall health.

  • Maintain a healthy body weight
  • Stay physically active
  • Avoid tobacco
  • Limit or avoid alcohol
  • Discuss personal and family history with a healthcare professional
  • Follow screening advice appropriate to your age and risk
04

Screening & Early Detection

Tests and examinations that may help detect cancer or precancerous changes.

  • Mammography may help detect breast cancer before symptoms appear.
  • A clinical breast examination may be recommended in certain circumstances.
  • People with a strong family history or higher inherited risk may need an individual screening plan.
  • Any new or unusual breast change should be assessed by a healthcare professional, even after a recent normal screening test.
05

Treatment Options

Treatment depends on the cancer type, stage and the person's overall health.

  • Surgery
  • Radiation therapy
  • Chemotherapy
  • Hormone therapy
  • Targeted therapy
  • Immunotherapy in selected cases
