Cancer awareness and information

Lung Cancer

Prevention, awareness and timely medical evaluation matter.

Lung cancer develops when abnormal cells grow uncontrollably in the lungs. Tobacco smoking is a major risk factor, but lung cancer can also occur in people who have never smoked.

Lung Cancer awareness

Understanding the disease

What is lung cancer?

The two main categories are non-small cell lung cancer and small cell lung cancer. Diagnosis and treatment depend on the cancer type, its stage, overall health and other individual factors.

Important to know

A persistent cough or breathing problem can have many causes. Seek medical advice for ongoing, worsening or unusual symptoms.

Knowledge and awareness

What you should know

Understanding symptoms, risk factors and available care can help people make informed decisions with their healthcare team.

01

Symptoms & Warning Signs

Changes that may need medical attention. Symptoms can also be caused by conditions other than cancer.

  • A persistent cough or a change in an existing cough
  • Coughing up blood
  • Chest pain or discomfort
  • Shortness of breath
  • Repeated chest infections
  • Unexplained weight loss or loss of appetite
  • Persistent tiredness
02

Risk Factors

Factors that may increase the chance of developing this cancer. Having a risk factor does not mean someone will develop cancer.

  • Smoking tobacco
  • Exposure to second-hand smoke
  • Exposure to radon or certain workplace substances
  • Outdoor and indoor air pollution
  • A family history of lung cancer
  • Previous radiation exposure to the chest
03

Prevention & Healthy Living

Practical steps that may help reduce risk and support overall health.

  • Do not smoke or use tobacco products
  • Seek support to quit smoking if needed
  • Avoid exposure to second-hand smoke
  • Follow workplace safety measures around harmful substances
  • Reduce exposure to indoor air pollutants where possible
  • Discuss personal risk with a healthcare professional
04

Screening & Early Detection

Tests and examinations that may help detect cancer or precancerous changes.

  • Low-dose CT scanning may be recommended for certain people at high risk.
  • Screening is not suitable for everyone and should follow professional guidance.
  • A chest X-ray is not a substitute for recommended lung cancer screening.
  • Persistent respiratory symptoms should be medically assessed rather than waiting for a screening appointment.
05

Treatment Options

Treatment depends on the cancer type, stage and the person's overall health.

  • Surgery in suitable cases
  • Radiation therapy
  • Chemotherapy
  • Targeted therapy
  • Immunotherapy
  • Combined treatment approaches
